letter to Year 10 students and families 23.5.25

Dear Year 10 students and families,

We are writing to you with information about the Year 10 mock exams taking place next half-term. I am sure that you can appreciate the GCSE exams are currently running so the school is a very busy place, especially as the GCSE written exams period spans 6 school weeks, and we have been working hard to ensure that Year 11 exams run smoothly for the students who have been working towards this point for five years.

For Year 10, in the fortnight of 24th June – 4th July, students will sit mock exams in English Language, English Literature, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, MFL (French and Spanish), RE, PE, iMedia, Computer Science, DT, Food Preparation and Nutrition. For these assessments, we will collapse the timetable and offer students the experience of sitting an example paper in a more formal exam setting. This experience, which students will have in the mock periods in November and February of Year 11 for all of their subjects, means that the exam hall, the rules and regulations and the exam room processes will all be things that students are completely used to by the time they sit their actual GCSE exams, and it is not something unknown.

We are making the timetable (attached) and revision resources available to support your child on the Year 10 area of the website.  Year 10 – Cottenham.  You will find links to:

A general revision booklet/guide– this is something we share regularly with students in Year 11 as well. It has useful advice on effective revision strategies, and it has further support and resources that students can use to help them: these are useful for their revision throughout Year 11, as well as for the Year 10 exam period.

A ‘handy revision guide’ which focuses on the most effective revision strategies, how they are influenced by cognitive science and why they work so well.

Revision homework – all homework will be revision homework from now on to support students to use their time effectively.

Knowledge Organisers

A range of knowledge organisers for each subject have been made available in lessons in many subjects already.  Students can use these knowledge organisers to create a range of revision resources (mind maps, flashcards for example).

Year 10 have been preparing for assessment in their KS4 subjects over the course of this academic year. They are a really useful diagnostic tool for teaching staff to make sure we can sharply focus our teaching and learning for Year 11, to best support the continued progress of students.

With very best wishes,

Amelia Parker

Assistant Principal
